Laamu Atoll, or Haddhunmathi Atoll as it's traditionally called, is an administrative division of the Maldives that corresponds to the natural atoll of the same name. It is located between latitude 2° 08' N and 1° 47' N, and situated to the south east of Thaa Atoll. The atoll is mostly rimmed by barrier reefs, the broadest of which are topped by islands.
Laamu Atoll is also renowned for its historical significance due to the presence of several ancient ruins. Historians believe that the ancient ruins on the islands bear witness to a long history of habitation. There are no less than three mounds on Hithadhoo as well as others on Maabaidhoo and Gaadhoo. However, the most well known ruins are located in Gan and Isdhoo.
